Happy Lunar New Year to everyone who celebrates it!
Food plays such a central part to all festivities, and this year, the father has decided that chicken rice balls (stuffed rightly so with shredded chicken) should be presented as part of the reunion dinner. Of course, the aunts decide to support the father’s cooking endeavour and bring in their arsenal of tahu telor, begedil (two types!), and loads of salad leaves. Family time making a good meal is honestly quite precious with the usual banter from the relatives.
For snacks, I’ve been eating hae bi hiam crackers (dried spicy shrimp), pineapple balls, kueh bangkit (coconut cookies) and peanut cookies. I left out my all-time favourite kueh lapis (buttery, eggy wonderful layer cake) from this picture but know that it has my heart all the same. It’s hard not to just over-indulge since everyone’s doing the same, but.. two pineapple tarts has more calories than a bowl of white rice!
This year’s a little bit quieter on my side, because of my grandmother’s passing in January. I’m just glad to have some time to really clean up the house, have meals with my family and friends, and take a breather after the rather angsty work week. Have a good festive break and may the Year of the Snake bring joy and happiness!
